Abused pictures

Here’s two pictures that cracked me and Infestor51 up:

The focus of the signs is supposed to be utilitarian, but I’m guessing that the sign intended the ladies to run to the toilet. And what about your gentlemen waiting for the ladies? Well, you could stand by the sign and smile like an eerie creep :) My guess is that the designer was probably in a hurry and simply dumped the first image he found in the clip art gallery! Sounds like something I’d do back in 1999.

Those signs are quite inappropriate (though it isn’t the “vulgar” or “crude” type of inappropriateness); not only is it hard to recognise that the signs were to inform commuters of the toilet’s location, the use of clip art is a huge dead give-away that both signs were made in Microsoft Word.

Well, the signs are still up there at Dover MRT station concourse, so if you would like to go organise a point-and-laugh flash mob, be sure to leave your comments here. In the meantime, I’ll show you how easy it is to get images for anybody who’s making toilet signs. All signs that follow are licensed under the Creative Commons.

Assignments due

Argh! I’m drowning…

  • Data Structures and Algorithms: The assignment is a Java project which is essentially simple enough, but I had to go and propose some ridiculous features that are way out of the normal IT Diploma standard. I can manage alright, but I think the other 2 members of the team are drowning, so we’re looking at a Tuesday deadline with absolutely no sign of us completing the assignment soon. It’s a case of trying too hard, I guess…
  • Designing User Interface: We’re supposed to write a 10-15 page report on the user interfaces on AXS machines. We’ve got the photographs, and the write-up is all nearly done, so I’m not having panic attacks on this one. Due on Tuesday.
  • Know Your Rights: This is my GEMs, and we had a report on recent court cases due yesterday. We managed to complete the report in good time, but there’s still the presentation to prepare for. The presentation is due on Tuesday morning.
  • System Development Techniques: This is the first module I’m having immense problems understanding. The concepts supposedly build on last years’ Entity relationship diagrams, but I really hate how the lecturer is able to pull classes out from thin air when I can’t even visualise them in the first place! We have to submit 3 Use-Case specifications, the Use-Case diagram, introduction, 3 horizontal prototypes on 30 May. I’m banging my head against the proverbial wall.
  • Java Server Programming: We’re supposed to write a complete web application for a fictitious tuition centre to manage its’ sprawling administration system. It was initially due next Sunday, but thankfully was postponed till end of June.

Year 2 is tough (if you don’t want to turn in mediocre work)!

Derelict and Neglect – WPDesigner.com

My favourite Wordpress design website, wpdesigner.com, has fallen into ruins. After the previous site owner, Small Potato, sold it to a Pawel Ciszewski, the new owner proceeded to do absolutely nothing to upkeep the blog. As anyone who uses Wordpress as a blogging platform can attest to, leaving your site alone for more than 2 weeks is a disastrous move — the accumulated spam comments in the links and unsoothed frustrated comments left by ignored loyal visitors will soon cause the pages to be barely tolerable.

Already, when I went to the site today, the main comment page was cluttered by skirmishes between frequent visitors, some of whom were posting by masquerading as the new owner (it’s easy to tell because the neglected state of the site shows that the administrator is not even active on the website).

Frankly, it’s a pity that such a good resource on Wordpress theme designing is being abandoned just like that. I made this blog’s current design after following the tutorials on WPDesigner (then still run by Small Potato). I believe that site would have gone even further if he had decided to stay on; plus I would be able to read more tutorials for free! Busy me can’t find the time to go around Google hunting for another similar site!

Oh well, stuff on the Internet come and go all the time; the burst bubble of 2000 remains very clear in my mind. In fact, for all you know, SgBlogging could simply just disappear into the night one day! (Mwahahahaha!) So, any bribe offers?

caramelldansen – I can watch this all day

Thank you Mei Poh! This really made my day!

If you don’t know already, caramelldansen is an Internet meme where cartoon, manga or comic characters do the rabbit ear dance to the song Caramelldansen (by the Swedish group Caramell).
