Broadband experience

I got myself a cable subscription, at a very cool 1,500 mbps!

Now I am free from the tenacious grip of the local telephone monopoly, which charges exhorbitant fees for dial-up connections. Can you believe that for the same amount of time I go online, they charge more than my new cable providor, and all for a much lower speed? How about paying S$58 flat fee per month for cable, compared to S$100 odd for 56k dial-up, with the charges continuously incurring every minute you are online?

I guess it is only in Singapore that we find idiosyncracies such as this.

Having a huge pipe can be an unnerving experience. When I went to the Windows Update website, I stood up from my chair, expecting the thing to take eons to download, and was surprised to see the web page fully downloaded and waiting for me to pore through even before I could finish standing up. Yea, I guess I kind of forgot that I now have a speedy connection to the World Wide Web.

So what is your connection like? Leave me some comments! (Ok, I guess I am getting desperate for some concrete evidence that I am not sounding off a blank wall out there.) Anything will do! Say Hi! Somebody, anybody, everybody….. comment! (I plagiarise it from Gurmit Singh.)

  4. Hi! I found your blog from sgforums, when you wrote abt your scout course experience. I read your sidebar about re-taking your ‘A’s and I would like to encourage you to do that. I came from Outram Insitute, and did not fare well for my As as well. Did not get into the Uni. Re-took it privately during my stint in the army(was an engineer spec, so had lull periods to study between exercises) and got better grades. Got into NUS and graduated a couple of years back. You should definitely go for it! You definitely have time to study in the army! Good Luck!
btw, if you’re interested in cycling, head over to http://www.togoparts.com
    it’s a local cycling portal.

  5. what you are getting is not true 1500Mbps. go to this url and click on the speed meter (located on the top):
    http://www.2wires.com

what you will realise is that the speed is fluctuating and at times, it is only a fraction of what is promised by the service provider. use this as an excuse to get waiver or some goodies. it works… most of the time.

on the side note, visit togopart.com if you are interested in getting to know your local cycling community.

  8. Thanks for your comments.

I know that the pipe is not guaranteed to be 1,500 kbps, due to packet overhead, and other conditions, but that is not such a big deal to me - I am not obsessed with military-precised speed for such the unreliable Internet.

Oh yes, I can be found on togoparts too, look out for me in the forums!

  9. Yo kes here. Hao lian lah got broadband. Haha just kidding. Just wanna say that i am happy for you on your new found speed and that may you stay happy alap (as long as possible). Thanks for watching Twins effect 2 with me sia. Can’t forget then when i was laughing away with a full bladder. See you. Brb in 10 days time from 210804. Will be your turn soon. Haha.

  10. ghostami? no. i am more vocal than that… you know who.

  11. We had exactly the same experience with dial-up/cable here in Japan a few years ago. We went from dial-up with per-minute charges to the much cheaper cable. Ludicrous.

It took a little while to turn off the meter in my head, though.

Funny that the same thing happened to you. Phone monopoly in Singapore, eh?

(a.k.a. Badaunt - Theic is my new blogspot blogname. I’m using both at present)

  12. Well, its the same one as this… But I don’t post often, I just love to lurk there in the background…

  13. To Badaunt:

That’s the thing with Singapore - we have a natural telephone monopoly. We do have a competing service provider for fixed lines, but it is really my ISP offering it over the cable network - I might as well have used cable Internet outright…
